On Tuesday, August 26, 2014, President Obama officially declared it Women’s Equality Day.
It was this date in 1920 when the 19th Amendment passed, granting women the right to vote.
Shout out to all the strong, independent women out there! Ladies, celebrate yourselves today, and men, make sure you do something to honor the women in your lives.
We’d like to give a special thanks to all the female singers who inspire other women with their music.
There are some very powerful women in music – Beyoncé, Lady Gaga, Rihanna…the list goes on. And, like the strong, bold women they are, they use their music to make a statement and empower other ladies like themselves.
Mary Lambert is on that list. She recently put out a behind-the-scenes video about her single “Secrets,” which encourages us all not to hide our true selves, even the parts we don’t like about ourselves.
Most of Lambert’s songs that you may know are about her sexuality, but the message carries over to all women.
Taking pride in yourself the way you are is a universal theme for any gender, race, or sexuality, for every human being, and we’re hearing more and more songs every day speaking to that theme.
So put these songs on a playlist for today or any day that you need an extra self-esteem boost.
There are many to choose from, but here are 10 of our favorite empowering songs by some of our favorite empowering women.
Colbie Caillat – “Try”
We featured this video before, talking about music videos that send an encouraging message. All of these videos send an important message to women, that you don’t have to try hard and change yourself to be beautiful and loved.
Meghan Trainor – “All About That Bass”
We’re addicted to this new Mix track, which encourages women of all sizes to embrace their beauty.
Destiny’s Child – “Independent Women”
Flashback moment: Beyoncé has been a fierce, fearless, and empowering woman since the Destiny’s Child days. This will always be a classic girl power song.
P!nk – “U + Ur Hand”
“Perfect” is probably P!nk’s most referenced inspirational song, but we already put that on our list of music videos with a message. Besides, “U + Ur Hand” says exactly what every strong, single woman wants to say – I don’t need a man, I’m going out on my own tonight, so don’t mess with me!
Sara Bareilles – “Brave”
“Brave” is an anthem if we’ve ever heard one. Say what you wanna say, ladies, be brave and speak up!
Whitney Houston (& Chaka Khan) – “I’m Every Woman”
Whitney. Need we say more?
Kelly Clarkson – “Stronger”
Kelly Clarkson has been through her share of breakups and sad songs, but in “Stronger,” she teaches us all to never let a man get you down and learn from every broken heart.
Carrie Underwood – “Nobody Ever Told You”
American Idol seems to have a habit of creating bold women. Carrie Underwood’s “Nobody Ever Told You” is a perfect pick-me-up, telling every woman out there what she really needs to hear.
No Doubt – “Just a Girl”
One more flashback, because Gwen Stefani has been kicking butt as a rock chick for decades.
Taylor Swift – “Shake It Off”
And the latest “I’m gonna be me” song that everyone is buzzing about. You tell ‘em, Taylor.
